More information: Tik-Toxic? Mental Health (Mis)information in the Age of Influence

Social media, TikTok trends, and influencer culture have shaped the way young people learn, engage, communicate, and think. The digital world impacts mental health awareness, both positively and negatively. Social media has contributed to increased recognition, normalization, acceptance, and access of mental health supports and services. However, sharing mental health information online can also pose risks, such as

  • inaccurate or pseudo scientific information,
  • harmful, oversimplified, or inaccurate depictions of mental health disorders
  • pathologizing of normative behaviours
  • incorrect representations of therapy concepts
  • endorsing unhealthy coping skills or unsubstantiated treatments

This workshop intends to:

  1. Outline the ways social media has been beneficial to mental health services.
  2. Describe  the risks associated with the proliferation of mental health information online
  3. Increase the clinicians understanding of the thinking errors and psychosocial reasons that can contribute these risks
  4. Provide tools to help increase adolescents (and clinicians own) critical thinking skills
  5. Describe how to use the therapeutic relationship to educate, validate, and support youth mental  health
